電子天平是采用電磁力平衡的原理,應用現代電子技術設計而成的。它是將稱盤與通電線圈相連接,置于磁場中,當被稱物置于稱盤后,因重力向下,線圈上就會產生一個電磁力,與重力大小相等方向相反。這時傳感器輸出電信號,經整流放大,改變線圈上的電流,直至線圈回位,其電流強度與被稱物體的重力成正比。而這個重力正是物質的質量所產生的,由此產生的電信號通過模擬系統后,將被稱物品的質量顯示出來。
由于電子天平是利用電磁力平衡的原理,沒有機械天平的橫梁,沒有升降樞裝置,全量程不用砝碼,直接在顯示屏上讀數,所以具有操作簡單,性能穩定,稱量速度快,靈敏度高等特點。目前一般電子天平還具有去皮(凈重)稱量、累加稱量、計件稱量等功能。并配有對外接口??蛇B接打印機、計算機、記錄儀等,實現了稱量、記錄、計算自動化。
